We Might See This Blue Bird...
Or we might see an Easter Bluebird as our first blue bird of 2010 when we go out birding later today. Both might be around though the Eastern Bluebird is far more likely.
In any case this Indigo Bunting seemed a fitting emblem for wishing a Happy New Year for 2010!
It's a quick watercolor based on a photo taken at Shenandoah National Park last spring. We concentrated on him while we waited for the resident Yellow-breasted Chat to make an appearance. Much chatting but no appearance sad to say!

Happy New Year! A bunting is a great way to honor the day. Our eastern blue birds have been flitting around the back yard. I love their shock of blue.
Happy New Year Pam! Nothing better than Eastern Bluebirds, except maybe Eastern Bluebirds against a snowy backdrop to really set off their colors!
Sad to say we didn't see any today, though we often do at this location. We did get some blue birds though: Blue Jays. And a surprise Eastern Towhee and Pileated Woodpecker. Towhees are normally gone by now. And though Pileateds are around we've never see one here. So all in all an auspicious start to the new year and new decade.
...Indigo Buntings are such happy birds. I love coming across them in the summer. Your painting reminds me they will be back--and things will be green again! Loved your Wood Warbler drawing. Happy New Year!
Hi Kelly,
That part about 'things being green again' was the same thought that I had. The green foliage and sunshine really brought out their blue color and that's why I chose it: the best part of spring and summer.
It seems hard to believe at the moment, but those times will return! Today the high probably barely got above 20 and it's a fierce wind. No wonder I'm thinking of the the sunny days of spring and summer.
